Description
No. 17 Chew Valley Road is a toll cottage, now a house, dating from around 1820. It is constructed of watershot hammer-dressed stone and features a graduated slate roof, along with a rear extension made of rendered brick. The building consists of two rooms with a small extension at the back. There are two doorways, one of which is now blocked, both featuring pointed-arch heads and interlaced fanlights. These are positioned on either side of a central window opening that has a stone lintel and sill, with a 20th-century casement window. The roof is pyramidal and has a central chimney stack. Each side elevation includes a pointed-arch window, also with 20th-century casements. The road is part of the Frenches and Hollins branch of the Standedge and Oldham Turnpike.
