Description
The Huddersfield Narrow Canal Halls Bridge and Lock 20W, located at SD 994 049 in Saddleworth, is an accommodation bridge and lock combination built in the early 19th century, with later alterations. It was probably designed by Benjamin Outram. The bridge is constructed of coursed, dressed stone and features a single, semicircular arch made of voussoirs. It has a stone band and half-round copings on the parapet, with some sections displaying tow-rope incisions. The west side of the bridge ends with stone pilasters topped with stone capstones, while the east side connects to the tail walls of the lock. The lock consists of a stone chamber with stone copings. The tail of the lock has a pair of double wooden gates, each equipped with manual gate paddle gearing, and the head features a single wooden gate with two sets of manual ground paddle gearings.
