Description
The accommodation underbridge for the Huddersfield & Manchester Railway was built in the mid to late 1840s by A S Jee. It is constructed from rock-faced and ashlar sandstone, specifically shale grit, Kinderscout grit, and millstone grit.
This bridge carries a two-track railway line over a footpath that slopes down to the south. It features deep, segmental arches made of v-jointed voussoirs crafted from picked ashlar with tooled margins, and taller keystones that project slightly and have diagonal tooling. The arches spring from an ashlar impost band that is similarly detailed. The bridge's abutments and spandrels are made from coursed, rock-faced stone blocks, while the soffit of the bridge consists of smaller, coursed, ashlar blocks. The ashlar parapets have a slightly projecting, square-moulded band with deeper panels above. The raked and splayed wing walls end in slightly projecting, rectangular piers and are built from coursed, rock-faced stone blocks topped with square-moulded ashlar coping.
