Description
Hill House Farmhouse and No. 2 Hill House Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, with an added porch dated 1698. The building is constructed of large dressed stone with a stone slate roof. It originally had a 3-room through-passage plan, with a third cell projecting forward to form a parlour wing, though this wing is under a cat-slide roof with a hall range. The house is two storeys high. Chamfered mullioned windows of 2 and 3 lights are found at the service end, with a 2-light flat-faced mullioned window above. The doorway has a monolithic lintel, composite jambs, and a deeply stop-chamfered surround, with a lean-to porch added around 1980. Above the porch is a 3-light window. The main housebody features double-chamfered mullioned windows of 4 lights (a fire window) and 5 lights. Above these are two chamfered windows, formerly of 2 and 3 lights; all first-floor windows lack mullions. The parlour wing projects forward, though it may have originally been flush with the front of the house. A single-storey section has a 4-light double-chamfered mullioned window. Coped gables with kneelers are present. The right-hand return wall contains a former 2-light chamfered window to the ground floor, with a 4-light double-chamfered mullioned window above it on the first floor. At the rear, a shallow gabled open porch leads to the through-passage doorway and bears the inscription āM Gā within a tressure, indicating the date 1698. To the left, at first floor level, is a small arched light with a chamfered surround. Single-storey buildings project forward on either side, featuring quoined angles and chamfered mullioned windows. There are three chimney stacks. Inside the main housebody elements remain, including reeded bressumers and spine beams with run-out stops.
