Description

Wadsworth Royd Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 16th century, with alterations in the 19th century. It is constructed of large dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The building is arranged as a hall and cross-wing plan, originally comprising three rooms at the front. At the service end, there are two chamfered mullioned windows of two lights, lacking their mullions. A doorway is situated in the through-passage position, mirroring a similar doorway at the rear but without an internal passage, opening directly into the service room. The doorway has a heavy monolithic lintel and composite jambs with a deeply chamfered surround. The main housebody has double-chamfered mullioned windows with a hood mould above, featuring straight returns. A four-light firewindow sits adjacent to a seven-light hall window, the latter partly lacking mullions and having been opened to create a doorway. The first floor has flat-faced mullioned windows of five, two, and ten lights. The house has a coped gable with kneelers and a base for a finial at the apex stone. A single stack is located on the ridge, dividing the two rooms. The cross-wing projects forward and includes altered two-light sash windows within the gable. The gable is coped with kneelers, while other mullioned windows remain in the return walls and to the rear. Inside, a bressumer beam is preserved, along with a firescreen featuring moulded muntins to which an original hanging cupboard is affixed, inscribed ‘IM 1632 SM'. There is also a corbelled fireplace.
