Description

Cruttonstall is a house dating from the early 17th century, constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high and features a three-room hall and cross-wing plan. The service end of the building is in ruins, with only the ground floor wall remaining. The windows throughout are double chamfered with hollow chamfered mullions. The cross-wing, which projects forward to the south, has a cat-slide roof that connects to the main range.

On the south side, there is a six-light window with a hoodmould that has a straight return, above which is a four-light window with an inserted two-light flat-faced mullioned window to the left. The right-hand return wall features a 19th-century doorway with monolithic jambs. The hall range, set back from the cross-wing, has a former five-light window that has been altered to form a doorway. There is also a three-light fire-window, which is missing a mullion. The through-passage doorway has composite jambs, a wide lintel, and a moulded surround, topped by a continuous stepped hoodmould.

On the first floor, there is a small window with a chamfered surround and a two-light flat-faced mullioned window. The service end has three-light chamfered mullioned windows on either side of the doorway, which also has a chamfered surround. The right-hand return wall has a three-light window, and the rear of the wing features a three-light chamfered mullioned window with a two-light window above it. The left-hand return wall has mostly been rebuilt in watershot masonry. The gable is coped and has a 19th-century stack, likely added when the roof was raised.
