Description

Thorps is a house dating from the early 18th century, with alterations and an added barn from the early 19th century. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The building is 1½ storeys high and consists of a two-cell layout with a gable entry that is now partly obscured by the added barn.

The north front has the barn to the left, with an outshut that projects forward, forming an aisle to the barn. There is a square-headed cart entry set back at the division between the house and the barn. An added outshut, which also breaks forward and has a corner stack, creates a porch with a doorway in the left return wall. The inner porch leads from the barn to the original gable entry of the house.

The house features a flat-faced mullioned window with four lights, while the parlour has a two-light window. The left-hand return wall includes a mistal doorway with large tie-stone jambs leading to the aisle. The barn gable has rectangular unchamfered ventilators. The right-hand return wall has a coped gable with kneelers and a three-light flat-faced mullioned window for the parlour, along with a small chamfered light to the right that was formerly a pantry.

On the first floor, there is a five-light chamfered mullioned window, although it is missing two mullions and is partly blocked. The rear of the building is set back to earth and features a chamfered light and a two-light chamfered window that lacks a mullion. Inside, there is a king post truss with angle struts and a groove on the soffit of the tie-beam.
