Description
This is a substantial house, built in the late 18th century, specifically 1788, as indicated by the initials “C R” carved into the stonework. It was originally owned by Christopher and Sophie Rawdon, who also owned Callis Mill. The house is now divided into two separate dwellings.
The front of the building is constructed of ashlar stone, while the sides and rear have hammer-dressed stone. The roof is covered with stone slates. The house is two storeys high with an attic. It features raised, rusticated quoins, a plinth, and two horizontal bands of window sills. The central entrance has paired doorways with unusually thick, monolithic jambs. There are two sash windows on either side of the front entrance, with simple stone surrounds. A return wall on the left side includes a semi-circular arched window on the first floor, featuring an impost block and keystone, which illuminates the staircase. Above this is a simple Venetian window to the attic. The gables are coped and have chimney stacks.
The rear of the building has altered windows, but retains three-light, flat-faced mullioned windows with stepped detailing on the first floor.
Inside, a stone dog-leg staircase with a half landing and a balcony is a notable feature. The balcony has a wrought-iron balustrade made up of wavy balusters paired with balusters featuring two and three heart-shaped motifs. A cast iron plate on one riser bears the initials and date in relief. The house shares architectural characteristics with Lacy House.
