Description
Lower Tunstead is a pair of houses, believed to date from 1730 and 1750. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a graduated stone slate roof. It comprises four bays and two storeys, with sections of single and double depth. The central two bays, likely dating to 1730, feature quoins and 4 and 3-light double-chamfered cavetto-moulded stone mullion windows on the ground floor, one 4-light window of the same style on the first floor, and one recessed flat-faced 4-light window. The eaves were raised around the same time the rear outshut was heightened to create the double-depth plan. A 20th-century extension is set to the left. Bay 4, added in 1750, has a door and 5 and 4-light double-chamfered cavetto-moulded stone mullion windows, along with quoins. A 20th-century brick lean-to is against the right gable. Two ridge chimney stacks are present. Various recessed flat-faced stone mullion windows are located to the rear, alongside a small lean-to addition. Group value is enhanced by the building's representation of vernacular architecture.
