Description
Nos. 216 and 217 on Gilesgate is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with a possible 17th-century structure incorporated in the rear wing. The building features painted stucco with painted ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof, complete with stone gable copings and a rendered chimney. It has an L-plan layout, is two storeys high, and consists of three bays. The windows are renewed sashes, with the central one being wider and all featuring glazing bars and projecting stone sills; the ground floor windows are set within architraves. The right side of the building, facing Ravensworth Terrace, includes a six-panelled door with a fanlight that has glazing bars, flanked by panelled pilasters and set in a wide round-headed opening. The steeply-pitched roof has a chimney located on the right gable at the rear. Inside, there is a staircase with a wide ramped grip handrail supported by vase balusters, and many six-panelled doors set in deep panelled reveals, along with some two-panelled doors with H hinges. The rear wing features closely spaced, massive first-floor joists of irregular shape, and the visible parts of the roof trusses are also massive, irregular, and pegged.
