Description
Nos. 25 and 27 on Church Street is a house that has been divided, originally built in the 16th century with refacing, partial rebuilding, and an addition from the mid to late 19th century. The structure features a roughcast timber frame, which has been rebuilt in painted brick on the left side, with a coursed limestone rubble plinth. The roof is slate, with graded stone slats on the left side at the rear.
The left side of the building likely includes a former open hall that has been rebuilt, with a two-bay gabled cross wing projecting to the right. The house is two storeys high and has two semi-integral brick end stacks on the left, along with a central brick stack off the ridge at the front. The left-hand range has a two-window front with two-light casements and five steps leading up to a central boarded door.
The cross wing shows evidence of a former jettied gable, indicated by a bracket on the left. It has one two-light casement on each floor. To the right, there is a mid to late 19th-century addition featuring a two-light casement on the first floor, a three-light casement on the ground floor to the right, and a half-glazed door to the left, which has a pilastered surround, frieze, and cornice. Inside, there is a 16th-century newel staircase located in the cross wing.
