Description

Two houses, numbers 213 and 214 Gilesgate, were built in the mid-18th century. They are constructed of painted stucco with painted ashlar dressings, and have a Welsh slate roof with a brick chimney.

Number 213, located on the left, is the earlier building and is set slightly back, incorporating the ground floor of the first bay of the later building. It consists of a basement and two storeys over one bay. Number 214 is two storeys high and has three bays. Number 213 features a basement glazed door and sash windows with glazing bars on each floor, along with stone gutter brackets. Number 214 has a multi-panel door with an overlight, recessed within a Tuscan doorcase at the right of the second bay. The ground floor of Number 214 features paired sash windows, while the remaining windows are sashes with glazing bars. The left return of the building contains the front door to Number 213, which is wide and features six panels within a panelled stone surround. The earlier building has a low-pitched roof, while the later building has a steeply-pitched roof with swept eaves and a ridge chimney.

The interior of the earlier building reveals wide six-panel doors, a stone staircase with a narrow handrail and curtail, while the later building retains some two-panel doors.
