Description

Two houses at 218 and 219 Gilesgate date from the early and late 18th century, with 20th-century alterations. They are painted render with a plinth and have Welsh slate roofs, featuring high-crested red ridge tiles to the left side of number 218, and brick chimneys. Number 218 is two storeys and four bays, with the first bay wider than the others. It has a blocked shop window on the ground floor and an inserted three-light window with "Ipswich" glazing bars, a wedge stone lintel, and a moulded stone sill. A ground-floor cornice is present, and the first floor window has 20th-century glazing and a slightly projecting stone sill. The steeply-pitched roof has a square brick chimney on the right end, with a projecting brick band above the base, which was raised in later brickwork. The left return has a bargeboarded gable. Number 219 also has two storeys and features a step up to a renewed six-panelled door with an overlight, set in deep panelled reveals and a doorcase of panelled pilasters and a prominent cornice. Renewed sash windows with glazing bars have projecting stone sills, with a blank bay above the door. The roof, with swept eaves, extends slightly over number 218 and has end chimneys. Number 218 is included in the listing for group value and because it is integral to number 219.
