Description

Nos. 1-3 on High Street is a former single house that has been divided into three separate residences. It dates from the early 18th century but has an older core. The building is constructed of random rubble resting on a boulder plinth, topped with a Welsh slate roof. It features five irregularly spaced bays and stands three storeys tall. The doorway, located second from the left, has a flat surround with a roll-moulded edge, a pulvinated frieze, and a cornice. There are additional plain doorways from the late 19th century inserted in the fourth bay and between the third and fourth bays. The ground and first floor windows are framed in rustic early 18th-century architraves, while the second-floor windows have later 18th-century moulded surrounds. The windows in the fourth bay are blocked, and the others have 20th-century sash windows. At the rear, there is one small square four-pane window on the left and one blocked 17th-century window with a moulded surround and cornice above. A stone ridge stack is positioned just to the right of the door. Inside, there are many old beams, some featuring run-out stops, along with massive principal rafters and collar beams that likely date from the 17th century. Other roof timbers have been renewed. All internal partitions, except for the heavily built chimney breast below the ridge stack, are 20th-century additions. The house may have originally had a cross-passage entry and an upper hall that was open to the roof.
