Description
6 Union Street in Kirkwall is a late 18th to early 19th century house that has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey building with an attic, featuring a symmetrical rectangular plan and a crowstepped design, with a stop-chamfered southeast angle. The exterior is harled.
On the south elevation, there is a deep-set timber-panelled door with a letterbox fanlight located in the central bay at ground level, with a window above it on the first floor. Each bay has a window at both the ground and first floors, and there is an additional window at ground level in the chamfered bay to the right.
The east side elevation has a window set to the right at ground level, and enlarged central windows on the first floor with one on each side of the gable. A gablehead stack is situated above.
The west side elevation features a window in each floor of the bay to the right. There is a forestair leading to a square-plan timber porch with a modern part-glazed door at the first floor in the bay to the right, and an attic window above. A gablehead stack is also present.
The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, and there are three evenly spaced rooflights on the south pitch. The roof is covered in grey slate and has a stone ridge, with corniced gablehead stacks and uPVC rainwater goods. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
