25 South End, Stromness

25 South End in Stromness is an earlier 19th-century house that has undergone later alterations. It is a single storey and attic structure, built over a basement, with a symmetrical three-bay rectangular plan and a gable end facing the street to the east. The house features a stop-chamfered northeast angle and is constructed on ground that rises steeply to the west. The exterior is harled, with a harl-pointed random rubble gable. The openings at the basement have cement-rendered and lined margins.

On the south elevation, there is a steep stone flight of steps leading to a deep-set door located at the first floor in the central bay, with a window in each of the flanking bays. The east side elevation includes an architraved deep-set part-glazed door, offset to the left at the basement, with an attic window above it. There is also a window at the basement near the chamfered angle and a gablehead stack above.

The house has replacement eight-pane timber sash and case windows, a Welsh purple slate roof with a stone ridge, and three evenly spaced rooflights on the south pitch. The gablehead stacks to the east and west are tall, harled, and corniced, while the skews have been replaced with concrete. The rainwater goods are made of uPVC. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997.
