Description

19, 21, and 23 South End in Stromness are a pair of houses built in the earlier to mid-19th century, with some later alterations. These two-storey and attic structures have a rectangular plan and feature crowstep gables. They have been internally divided into three separate dwellings, consisting of two three-bay houses on the east side, which have a forestair and a bridge leading to the rear entrances, situated on ground that rises to the west. The exterior is finished with modern harling.

The principal elevation on the east side features a three-bay group on the left. There is a deep-set modern door at ground level in the central bay, with a window on each floor in the bay to the right. The bay to the left has a window at each floor, with a box dormer that breaks the eaves. The three-bay group on the right also has a deep-set modern door at ground level in the central bay, with a window above on the first floor and windows in the flanking bays.

The rear elevation on the west side is irregular and consists of four bays. There is a stone flight leading to a modern door at the first floor in the central bay, and an L-plan bridge addition connects to a pitch-roofed porch with a modern door at the attic level, offset to the left. There is a window at the first floor in the flanking bays.

The north side elevation has a two-bay gabled wall, featuring an attic window on the left and a ground-level window on the right, with a multi-flue gablehead stack above.

The windows are 4-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with purple Welsh slate and has a stone ridge, with a rooflight on the west pitch. The gablehead stacks on the north and south sides are harled and corniced, and the property has uPVC rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997.
