Description

2 South End in Stromness is a late 18th century house that has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey and attic structure with a symmetrical three-bay rectangular plan, featuring a four-bay pitch-roofed timber projection that was formerly a boat-building shed on the east side. The exterior is finished with re-pointed roughly coursed and squared rubble.

On the south elevation, which is the principal front, there is a timber panelled door with a fanlight in the central bay, with a window above it on the first floor. Each of the flanking bays contains a window on both floors, and there is a window in each bay of the boat shed to the outer right.

The north elevation, or rear, has a full-height gabled bay in the center with a window on each floor. There are also windows at the ground and first floors in each flanking bay, along with a window in each bay of the boat shed to the outer left.

The west side elevation features a single bay gabled section with a window on each floor to the left and a gablehead stack above. The east side elevation has a sliding door in the center and three lights, with a tall light in the center of the gablehead. There is also a window set to the right on the first floor and attic, along with a gablehead stack above.

The windows throughout are 4-pane timber sash and case, while the boat shed has fixed 4-pane timber-framed windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring a stone ridge and slate on the dormer, with corrugated perspex on the boat shed. The skews have been replaced with concrete, and there are corniced rubble gablehead stacks on the east and west sides, along with uPVC rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 1997.

To the east, there is a rectangular-plan quay made of Caithness flagstones, bordered by a low coped rubble wall. A concrete slipway made of laid rubble is located at the southeast angle, along with an operational cast-iron boat derrick at the same angle.
