42 Alfred Street, Stromness

42 Alfred Street in Stromness is a mid to late 19th century town house with later alterations. It is a two-storey and attic building with a symmetrical three-bay rectangular plan, featuring a gable end facing the street. The house is built on slightly rising ground to the south and is harled with plain painted cement margins around the openings.

On the north (principal) elevation, there is a modern timber panelled door located in the central bay at ground level, with a window above it on the first floor. Each of the flanking bays also has a window on both floors.

The west (street) elevation displays a two-bay gabled wall, with windows set low in each bay at ground level. There is a window on the first floor, along with a window in the gable shoulder above in the right bay. A gablehead stack is present above.

On the east elevation, there is a window in each floor of the right bay, while the left bay is adjacent to Number 40 Alfred Street. The windows are modern tilt opening four-pane timber types. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are coped harled stacks at the gableheads with plain cans, along with uPVC rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen during the inspection in 1997.
