Description
57 Alfred Street in Stromness is a mid to late 19th century two-storey, five-bay terrace house that has undergone later alterations and additions. The terrace features an asymmetrical two-bay house with an attic on the left (No 59) and a three-bay symmetrical house on the right (No 57). The exterior is cement-rendered with lined cement margins around the openings, and it is painted on the left side.
On the principal elevation, No 59 has a part-glazed boarded door located in the right bay at ground level, with a window above it on the first floor. There is also a window in each floor of the right bay. Above, there is a flat-roofed double box dormer. No 57 features a deep-set timber panelled door with a three-light rectangular fanlight and two-leaf boarded storm doors in the central bay at ground level, with a window above on the first floor. Each bay flanking No 57 has a window at both floors.
The right side of the terrace has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the left side has modern top tilt timber-framed windows. The dormer windows on the left are made of uPVC, and there are two rooflights positioned on the left side of No 57. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring a stone ridge, concrete ashlar skews, and coped gablehead stacks. There is also a coped rubble ridge stack, decorative octagonal and moulded corniced cans, and uPVC rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997.
