Description
61 and 63 Alfred Street in Stromness is a mid to late 19th century two-storey house with a near-symmetrical rectangular plan, known as number 61, which is adjacent to another rectangular house and a crowstepped gabled store at right angles to the rear, forming an L-shape. The building is situated on ground that rises to the west at the rear. The exterior is harled, with pointed random rubble on the sides and a harl-pointed crowstepped gable at the rear. The openings feature painted margins.
On the east (principal) elevation, there is a deep-set timber panelled door with a small-pane fanlight located in the bay to the right of centre. To the right of this door is a window that is set close, and above it is another window at the first floor. In the bay to the left of centre, there is a window on each floor.
The north and south (side) elevations are irregularly fenestrated, and there are gablehead stacks at the outer left and right sides, respectively.
On the west (rear) elevation, there is a deep-set boarded door that is offset to the right of centre, with a wide gablehead stack above it.
The windows are predominantly four- and twelve-pane timber sash and case, along with small two-pane rooflights. Number 61 has modern asbestos tiles, while the rear is covered with purple Welsh slate. The building features stone ridges, corniced rubble ridge and gablehead stacks, and uPVC rainwater goods.
The interior was not fully seen as of 1997.
