Description
5 Main Street in Kirkwall is a house built in the late 18th to early 19th century, with later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey and attic structure with a rectangular plan and crowstepped gables, featuring a symmetrical design. A later gabled addition at the rear creates an L-shape. The exterior is harled, and the windows have block cills.
On the principal (east) elevation, there is a modern part-glazed timber panelled door located in the central bay at ground level, with a window above it on the first floor. Each of the three bays has a window on both floors.
The rear (west) elevation has a window in the left bay on both floors, with a stair window offset to the right of centre. There is a two-storey gabled projection on the outer right, along with a single-storey store projection at ground level. This section features three closely set windows on the first floor above, and a modern door with a window beside it on the ground level in the left return, with three more closely set windows above.
The north side elevation has two small attic windows positioned on either side of the gable, with gablehead stacks above.
The windows are 2-pane timber sash and case style, and there are two evenly spaced rooflights on the west pitch. The roof is modern and covered with concrete tiles, while the gablehead stacks are harled, with the stack on the north side being corniced. The property has uPVC rainwater goods. The interior was not seen in 1998.
