Description
8 Clay Loan in Kirkwall is a 17th-century house with later alterations. It is a single-storey and attic structure with a rectangular plan, featuring a crowstepped design. The house has a two-bay gabled elevation facing Victoria Street and is adjacent to a similar house to the south. The exterior is harled with an eaves course.
On the west elevation, which serves as the entrance from Victoria Street, there is a part-glazed timber panelled door located in the right bay. To the left, there is a window on each floor, with a gablehead stack above. The gabled elevation is adjacent to the similar house on the left.
The north side elevation also has two bays, with a window in each bay. The east rear elevation features a lean-to projection at the rear of Number 10, which is listed separately, located in the left bay at ground level. There is a window on each floor in the right bay, with a gablehead stack above.
The house has 12-pane timber sash and case windows and three irregularly placed rooflights on the north pitch. The roof is covered with modern grey slate and has a stone ridge, with harled, corniced gablehead stacks on the east and west sides. The rainwater goods are made of uPVC.
The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
