Description

1 Manse Lane in Stromness is a house built in the late 18th to early 19th century, with some later alterations. It is a two-storey building with an attic and has an asymmetrical three-bay rectangular plan, featuring a gable end facing the street. It is adjacent to another two-storey, three-bay house to the west. The southern elevation is made of harl-pointed rubble, while the eastern gable is harled. The windows have cement-rendered margins, and the second-floor windows are positioned close to the eaves.

On the southern elevation, the main entrance is a part-glazed timber panelled door located in the central bay at ground level, with a window above it on each floor. There is also a window in the left bay at each floor and another window in the right bay on the second floor.

The eastern elevation, which faces Victoria Street, features a two-bay gabled wall. There is a window on each floor to the left and windows at the ground and first floors to the right, with a gablehead stack above.

The house predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with fixed small-pane windows on the second floor. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a stone ridge, along with two unevenly placed rooflights on the southern pitch. There is a harled corniced stack on the eastern side and a common harled corniced stack on the western side, with cement skews and uPVC rainwater goods.
