81, 83 Victoria Street, Stromness

81 and 83 Victoria Street in Stromness is a house built in the earlier to mid-19th century, with later alterations. It is a 2 and a half storey rectangular-plan structure featuring a gabled end facing the street to the east and gabletted dormers on the north side. The ground floor on the north side has been subdivided and converted into a shop, and there is an adjoining 2-storey house to the west, which is listed separately. The exterior is made of coursed, pointed rubble, with the ground floor on the east side being cement-rendered and lined, and there are defined margins around the openings. The shop front on the north side has a three-bay harled design.

On the north (principal) elevation, there is a deep-set modern part-glazed door located to the right of centre at ground level, with a window above it on the first floor. Each bay features a window on every floor, including the dormer.

The east (Victoria Street) elevation has a window at ground level to the right, which was formerly a door, and a window above it on the first floor. There is also a window on the ground floor to the left. A gablehead stack is positioned above.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 2 and 4 panes. The roof is covered with grey slate, including the dormers, and features a stone ridge and concrete skews. The gablehead stacks on the east and west sides are made of corniced rubble, and the property predominantly uses uPVC for rainwater goods.

The interior has been converted into a shop on the north side, while the remainder of the interior was not seen as of 1997.
