Description
15 and 17 Bridge Street in Kirkwall is an 18th-century building with later alterations. It is a two-storey and attic structure with a rectangular plan, now converted into a shop. The building features a crow-stepped gable facing the street and is adjoined by a two-storey, four-bay rectangular-plan house to the west. The ground floor of the eastern elevation is cement-rendered and lined, while the northern elevation of the eastern house is also cement-rendered. The rest of the building is harled, with a band course separating the ground and first floors on the eastern side.
On the eastern elevation facing Bridge Street, there are three large shop windows evenly spaced at the ground level, with a window to the right of center on both the first floor and ground floor above. The northern elevation features a two-bay group on the left, with a large shop window at ground level in the left bay and a window above on the first floor. The right side has a four-bay group with modern timber doors in each bay at ground level to the left and a window in each remaining bay.
The building showcases a variety of glazing patterns, including shop windows and timber sash and case windows with two, four, and twelve panes. The eastern house has a grey slate roof, while the western house has a corrugated-iron roof, with a stone ridge and a coped, harled gablehead stack on the eastern side that is not in use. The rainwater goods are made of uPVC.
The interior of the eastern house has been converted into a shop at ground level, while the upper floors are unseen. The western house was also unseen as of 1998.
