Description
41 Victoria Street in Kirkwall is an 18th-century building that has undergone later alterations. It is a two-storey structure with a rectangular plan, featuring two sets of six bays and crowstepped gable ends. Originally a pair of houses, it has been converted into a single property that now serves as a shop on the ground floor. The exterior is harled and includes a band course with a shop fascia between the floors on the gabled elevation, an eaves course, and modern concrete cills.
On the eastern gabled elevation, there is a modern part-glazed door at the ground level located at the chamfered angle on the outer left. To the right of this door are two closely spaced shop windows, with two evenly spaced windows above on the first floor and a gablehead stack above.
The southern side elevation is divided into two groups of three bays. The left group features a central bay with two-leaf part-glazed doors at ground level and a window above on the first floor, along with a window in the bay to the left at both floors. The bay to the right has a part-glazed door at ground level and a window above. The right group has a small window at the first floor in the central bay, with non-aligned windows in the left bay and windows in the right bay at both floors.
The windows are timber-framed with top-hung upper lights, and the eastern elevation has large shop windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a stone ridge, along with a harled, coped gablehead stack on the eastern side. The property also has uPVC rainwater goods.
The interior has been converted for use as a shop on the ground floor, while the upper floors remain unseen and were last noted in 1998.
