Description
47 Victoria Street in Kirkwall is an 18th-century building that has undergone later alterations. It is a two-storey, four-bay structure made up of a pair of rectangular-plan crowstepped gabled houses that project at right angles to the rear of Number 51, which is listed separately. The western house may incorporate some 17th-century fabric and features a single-over-three-bay layout, while the eastern house is a three-bay structure from the 18th century. The exterior is harled with an eaves course and has plain cement margins around the openings.
On the north (principal) elevation, the eastern house has a part-glazed architraved door at ground level in the central bay, with a small window above it on the first floor. There is a window on each floor in the bays on either side. The western house features a window at ground level and a small window at the first floor in the central bay, with another window at ground level in the bay to the right. It also has a part-glazed architraved door at ground level in the bay to the left.
The south (rear) elevation shows that the eastern house has a window at ground level in the central bay, while the western house has a window on each floor in each bay. The west (gable) elevation includes a window at the first floor in the left bay and a harled gablehead stack.
The building has replacement timber-framed tilt and turn windows and rooflights on the south pitch. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring a stone ridge, a harled and coped stack on the west side, a harled and corniced stack on the east side, and uPVC rainwater goods.
