Description
26 and 28 Bridge Street in Kirkwall is an 18th-century building that was rebuilt around 1815 and has undergone later alterations. It is a two-storey and attic structure with a rectangular plan, featuring two bays on the upper floor and five bays at ground level. The ground floor is cement rendered, while the first floor is harled, with a band course separating the two levels. The ground floor windows have raised, painted margins, and the first-floor windows have cement cills.
On the west elevation, there is a recessed, part-glazed timber panelled door with a letterbox fanlight, located in a bay that is offset to the left of centre. Above this door is a window on the first floor, with additional windows in each bay flanking the door at ground level and a window in the outer right bay on both floors.
The north side elevation features a window to the right of centre on each floor, along with a small attic window in the gable and a gablehead stack above. The south side elevation abuts number 30 and has a gablehead stack.
The ground floor has timber-framed shop windows, while the first floor has modern small-pane timber-framed windows with top-hung upper lights. There are two evenly spaced roof lights on the west pitch. The roof is covered in grey slate, replacing a 20th-century corrugated-iron roof, and features a stone ridge, corniced harled gablehead stacks, and uPVC rainwater goods.
The interior has been converted into a modern shop at ground level, with other areas not visible.
