Description
11 Bridge Street in Kirkwall is an 18th-century tenement that was reworked in the 19th century and has undergone later alterations. It is a three-storey, two-bay building with a rectangular plan and a piended roof. The ground floor has been converted into a shop, featuring painted cement render and a lined finish at the ground level, with harled walls above. The windows have concrete margins, and there is a modern timber fascia over a band course between the ground and first floors.
On the principal elevation, there is a deep-set modern glazed door with a large rectangular fanlight in the central bay, flanked by large shop windows in each bay. Each bay above has a window on every floor. The north side elevation, which is accessed via a close, has an irregular arrangement of windows and a tall wallhead stack positioned to the left. The south side elevation features a large shop window in the outer right bay and a window above it on the first floor, with a tall wallhead stack set to the right of centre.
The large shop windows at the ground level have a two-pane upper border, while the upper floors have 12-pane and 8-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are tall, harled, corniced wallhead stacks on both the north and south sides, along with uPVC rainwater goods. The interior has been converted to a shop at the ground level, with the upper floors remaining unseen since 1998.
