Description

2 Broad Street in Kirkwall is an early 19th-century tenement that has undergone later alterations. It is a three-storey, two-bay building with a rectangular plan and crow-stepped gable ends. The ground floor features a shop on the west side, and the building is set on slightly rising ground towards the east. There is a single-storey, two-bay projection on the east side. The exterior is cement rendered and lined over random rubble, with ashlar margins around the windows and painted quoins.

On the west gable elevation, there is a recessed, central part-glazed door with large shop windows on either side, all beneath a corniced fascia at ground level. The upper floors have regular fenestration, and there is a multi-flue gablehead stack.

The south side elevation of the tenement has five bays. At ground level, there is a timber-panelled door with a letterbox fanlight, positioned to the right of centre, and a window in the outer right bay. The first floor has five evenly spaced windows, while the second floor has four windows that are unevenly distributed. There is a deep-set doorway with a window to the right, leading to the single-storey projection on the east side.

The east side elevation features the single-storey projection at ground level, with a small window to the left of the gable and a multi-flue gablehead stack above.

The north rear elevation is irregularly fenestrated. The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring a stone ridge, corniced and rendered stacks, and uPVC rainwater goods.

The interior has been converted into a modern shop at ground level, with the rest of the interior not visible.
