Description
4 Broad Street in Kirkwall is an earlier 19th century, two-storey, three-bay, rectangular-plan town house that has been converted into offices. The building features a lower two-bay wing at the rear, creating an L-shape, with a stair tower at the angle and crowsteps on the rear. The exterior is constructed from re-pointed squared and coursed rubble, accented with polished ashlar and cement dressings. There is a band course between the floors and an eaves course, with plain cement margins around the windows and long and short quoins.
On the west (principal) elevation, there is a pilastered and corniced doorpiece in the central bay at ground level, featuring a timber panelled door with a decorative geometric fanlight above it. Each floor has a window in each bay flanking the door. The north (Strynd) elevation has a window set to the left at ground level in a gabled block to the right, along with a blocked window at ground level and a window at the first floor in each of the two bays of the left wing.
The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows and a graded grey slate roof with a stone ridge. There is a harled, corniced gablehead stack to the south, an ashlar, corniced stack to the north, and an extended stack on the rear wing. The west elevation features stone skews and thack stanes, with predominantly cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior has been converted for office use, but it was not fully seen during the inspection in 1998.
