Description

The Orkney Tourist Board building, located at 6 Broad Street in Kirkwall, is a late 18th century, two-storey and attic, three-bay symmetrical house that has been converted into a tourist office. The structure has a rectangular plan and features piended dormers and crowsteps at the rear. It is harled with painted cement dressings, and includes a base course and eaves course. The windows have plain margins and strip quoins.

On the west (principal) elevation, there is a corniced and architraved doorpiece at ground level in the central bay, featuring a timber panelled door with a geometric fanlight above it. A window is located at the first floor directly above the door. There are windows in each floor of the flanking bays, and two evenly spaced, three-light dormers above.

The south (side) elevation is two bays and near-symmetrical. It has an architraved door with a rectangular fanlight at ground level in the bay to the right of centre, a window at the first floor, and an attic window in the gable above. There is a window at each floor in the bay to the left of centre, with a gablehead stack above.

On the north (side) elevation, there is a window at each floor in the bay to the right of centre, a small attic window in the gable, and a gablehead stack above.

The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with 4-pane timber sash and case windows in the central dormer lights. There is a rooflight at the centre of the west pitch. The roof is covered with grey slate, has a stone ridge, stone skews to the west, and crowsteps to the east. The gablehead stacks are harled and corniced, and the building has uPVC rainwater goods.

Inside, the ground floor has been converted into a tourist office, featuring timber skirting boards and timber-panelled doors, while the upper levels remain unseen.
