Description
7 The Strynd in Kirkwall is an 18th-century building that has undergone later alterations. It is a two-storey, two-bay rectangular former house, which is adjacent to a taller, two-storey, two-bay rectangular-plan crowstepped-gabled former house that has been converted into tea rooms. The exterior is made of random rubble with deep-set openings.
On the north elevation facing The Strynd, the left two-bay section features a centrally located modern part-glazed door at ground level, with a window on each floor in the bay to the left and a window on the first floor set wide to the right. The right two-bay section has a blocked doorway at ground level in the bay to the right and a window on the first floor. There is also a blocked window at ground level in the bay to the left, with a window on the first floor.
The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The left-hand block has modern concrete tiles, while the right-hand block features traditional graded stone tiles. There is a tall rubble gablehead stack to the east and an extended harled, coped stack in the center. The building predominantly has cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior has been converted into a tea room on the ground floor, with the upper floors remaining unseen.
