Description

13 Bridge Street in Kirkwall is an 18th-century town house that has been reworked in the 19th century and undergone later alterations. The building is two stories high with an attic and features three bays, having been converted for use as an office. It has large pitch-roofed dormers and a two-bay gable end facing the street to the east, with a crow-stepped gable on the west side.

The exterior is painted cement rendered and lined on the east elevation, while the principal elevation to the south is harled. Sandstone dressings are present at the ground level, with painted plain cement margins above on the east elevation. The openings at the ground level on the east and the main door on the south have chamfered reveals. The building has a base course and a corniced fascia on the east elevation, along with strip quoins.

On the east (gabled) elevation, there is a part-glazed timber panelled door with a large rectangular fanlight at the ground level in the central bay, flanked by enlarged shop windows. Each bay above has a window on both floors, and there is a gablehead stack.

The south (entrance) elevation features a similar part-glazed timber panelled door with a large rectangular fanlight at the ground level in the central bay, with a window above on the first floor. To the left, there is a deep-set modern timber door with a window beside it at the ground level in the outer left bay, with a window above on the first floor and a dormer window above that. The outer right bay has a window at each floor and a dormer window above.

The west (rear) elevation has a modern projection at the ground level in the bays, with a window set to the right on the first floor and an attic window above, along with a gablehead stack.

The building predominantly features two-pane timber sash and case windows, with a large fixed uPVC office/shop window at the ground level on the east. The roof is covered in grey slate, with a stone ridge and stone skews. The east side has a cement-rendered, coped stack, while the west side has a harled, coped stack that is not in use. The building has uPVC rainwater goods, although some cast-iron downpipes remain.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
