Description
This building at 2 Bridge Street in Kirkwall dates from the 18th century and has undergone later alterations. It is a two-storey house with an attic, featuring two bays and a crow-stepped gable facing Bridge Street. There is also a single bay, two-storey lean-to projection with a canted northeast angle along the northern elevation, which is known as Shore Street. The ground floor has been converted into a shop. The building has a painted, cement-rendered finish at the ground level on Bridge Street, while the rest is painted and harled. A base course runs along the bottom.
On the west elevation facing Bridge Street, there is a deep-set, modern glazed door with a large rectangular fanlight in the central bay. To the left, there is an enlarged shop window, and to the right, there are two more bays. The gable features two attic windows and a gablehead stack.
The north elevation along Shore Street has three bays. There is a shop window in the bay offset to the left of center and another to the outer right. A deep-set modern timber-panelled door with a letterbox fanlight is located in the outer left bay, with a window above it on the first floor.
The building features four-pane timber sash and case windows, a shop window at the ground level, and rooflights on the northern pitch. The roof is covered with grey slate, has a stone ridge, and stone skews on the projection, with predominantly cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior has been converted into a shop at the ground level, while the upper levels remain unseen and were last noted in 1998.
