Description
19 Bridge Street in Kirkwall is possibly an 18th-century house that has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey building with an attic and features two bays, with the gable end facing the street and a forestair leading to the first-floor entrance on the south side. The gable end is cement-rendered and lined, while the south side is harled, with cement dressings throughout. There is a band course and cornice between the floors, and the openings have plain margins.
On the east elevation, there is an enlarged shop window in the left bay at ground level and a modern glazed door in the right bay. The first floor has a window in each bay, and there are small attic windows on either side of the gable, with a gablehead stack above.
The south elevation, which is the entrance side, has three bays. The forestair leads to a deep-set modern timber panelled door located in the centre bay on the first floor, with a window in each flanking bay.
The building features modern two-pane timber sash and case windows, fixed attic windows, and rooflights on the south pitch. The roof is covered in grey slate with a stone ridge, and there are harled and cement-rendered gablehead stacks on the east and west sides, along with uPVC rainwater goods. The interior was not seen in 1998.
