Description

93-95 Commercial Street in Lerwick is an 18th-century tenement building that has undergone alterations in the 19th and late 20th centuries. It features three storeys and an attic, with a two-bay gable facing north and a partially obscured three-bay elevation to the east. The eastern elevation is harled, while the rest of the building is made of harl-pointed rubble, with painted stone margins around the windows.

The north gable is near-symmetrical, with paired panelled timber pilasters framing a shopfront. This shopfront includes a shop window over a stall riser on the right and a panelled door with a glazed upper section recessed on the left, topped with a frieze and cornice. The first and second floors have regular fenestration, and the gablehead has been altered to a mansard form.

The east elevation has three bays, with the centre and left bays obscured by modern additions. The shopfront on the right matches the north elevation, featuring a shop window over a stall riser flanked by paired panelled pilasters. The bay above has regular fenestration.

The west elevation has irregular fenestration on the upper floors. The south gable has a lean-to addition at ground level, with infilled openings on the first and second floors to the left.

The building retains timber sash and case windows in the original openings, with a 12-pane window on the first floor of the gable and plate glass windows elsewhere. It has a grey slate mansard roof with segmental-headed metal-clad dormers that contain four-pane timber sash and case windows. The original south gable features stugged sandstone apex stacks with copes and circular cans.
