Description

101 Commercial Street in Lerwick is an 18th-century, two-storey and attic tenement located at the end of a terrace. It features a two-bay gable facing Commercial Street and a six-bay elevation towards Gardie Lane. The building has harl-pointed rubble walls with droved sandstone margins and dressings, and the windows are margined with projecting cills.

On the north elevation facing Commercial Street, the design is asymmetrical. The ground floor has a smooth cement-rendered shopfront, with a panelled door featuring a glazed upper section on the left and a plate glass fixed-light window on the right. The first floor has regular fenestration, and there is a single attic window in the left bay.

The east elevation facing Gardie Lane is also asymmetrical and consists of six bays arranged in two groups of three. The right group (No 1) has a rendered brick and stone forestair with a wrought-iron handrail at the ground level, leading to a narrow vertically-boarded timber door centered in the first floor, flanked by windows. There is an infilled window at ground level in the bay to the right. The left group (No 2) has a higher wallhead and floor levels, featuring a vertically-boarded timber door with a plate glass fanlight in the center bay, a boarded doorway in the bay to the right, and an infilled window in the outer left bay. The first floor has regular fenestration.

The building has timber sash and case windows, with 12 panes on the first floor and 8 lying panes in the attic. The roof is covered with grey slate and has red ridge tiles, along with cast-iron gutters and downpipes. The north gable and the mutual west gable have stugged ashlar apex stacks, coped with circular cans and cement-rendered skew copes.
