86 Commercial Street, Lerwick

86 Commercial Street in Lerwick is an 18th-century tenement building that stands two stories tall with an attic and a concealed basement, situated on a sloping site. The building features a two-bay gable facing Commercial Street and three-bay elevations on the northern and southern sides. The shopfront is cement-rendered and lined, while the rest of the structure is made of harl-pointed rubble walls with stugged sandstone dressings, which are droved at the edges. The windows have projecting cills.

On the west elevation, which faces Commercial Street, there is a near-symmetrical gable with a corniced and painted shopfront on the main floor. This shopfront includes a wide opening with a door featuring a mosaic threshold on the left and a shop window above a stall-riser on the right. The first floor has regular fenestration in the bay to the right, and there is a single window in the gablehead of the bay on the left.

The south elevation displays a variety of openings, most of which have been infilled. There is a modern addition that oversails the first floor, obscuring the right bays.

On the north elevation, there is a vertically-boarded timber door at the basement in the left bay, with windows located in the ground level of the center and left bays. A concrete stair with a steel handrail leads to a door at the first floor in the center bay, with a window adjacent to the right. The right bay is blank, and there is also a blank bay at the first floor in the left bay.

The upper floors of the gable feature 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with purple-grey slate and has a droved sandstone apex stack, which is coped with circular cans, along with ashlar skew copes that have bracketted skewputts.
