Description
The Peerie Shop, located on the Esplanade in Lerwick, dates from around 1735. This long single-storey and attic building has a rectangular plan and features seven bays, with closes on either side and a gable facing the street. The walls are constructed of random rubble, accented with stugged and droved sandstone dressings.
On the east elevation facing the Esplanade, there is a wide opening with a modern two-leaf vertically-boarded timber door positioned centrally in the gable. To the left, an integral rubble buttress is advanced, with "Grieg’s Pier" inscribed in the stonework above. The door features a plate glass fixed-light centered in the gablehead, and there is a flat stone at the apex.
The south elevation, known as Grieg’s Closs, has seven bays and is corbelled out at mid-height between the second and third bays from the right. The outer left bay contains a boarded window, while the bay to the right has a rubble-infilled door. There is a 12-pane timber sash and case window in the next bay, and the bay to the right is blank at ground level. Above, there is a rubble catslide dormer with a boarded opening, which breaks the eaves and is accessed by a rubble stair and a stone slab bridge over the close. Modern glazing is present in the next bay to the right, along with brick and glazed infill in the penultimate bay, and paired doors in the outer right bay.
The north elevation, facing Campbell’s Closs, consists of four bays grouped on the right, each featuring vertically-boarded timber doors. Two of these bays on the outer right have two-leaf doors, while the bay to the left has an infilled opening over the lintel.
The roof is covered with grey-purple slate and features ashlar skew copes on the east gable.
