Description

The Medical Hall, located at 96 Commercial Street in Lerwick, is a later 19th-century, two-storey building with an attic and basement. It features a three-bay tenement design with a rectangular plan and a chamfered corner to the northwest. The main façades face Commercial Street and the Esplanade, with closes on the north and south sides. The building has a painted shopfront on Commercial Street, with stugged squared and snecked sandstone end elevations and rubble sides. The window reveals are stop-chamfered.

On the west elevation facing Commercial Street, the design is asymmetrical with three bays, including the chamfered corner bay on the left. The principal floor has shop windows in the corner bay and to the left of the centre bay, with a modern two-leaf shop door (featuring a tiled threshold) to the right and another door in the outer right bay. Above the shopfront, there is a frieze and cornice. The first floor has segmental-arched windows with keystones, including a bipartite window in the centre bay and single windows in the flanking bays, with a string course above that is articulated around a blank panel at the corner bay. The second floor features round-arched windows with crow-stepped dormer heads that break the eaves in the corner bay and are centred over the bays on the right.

The south elevation, facing Quendale Lane, is nearly blank, with only a few windows on the first floor and a door at the basement. The north elevation, facing Nicolson's Closs, has three random windows on the first floor and is otherwise blank.

The east elevation, which faces the Esplanade, is nearly symmetrical. It has a four-pane shop window at the basement with a door in the left bay. The first floor has a centrally located window flanked by narrower windows, with a frieze above. The segmental-arched windows on the upper floors are centred, with a bipartite window on the first floor and a timber-headed dormer that breaks the eaves on the second floor.

The building features plate glass timber sash and case windows on the first and second floors, except for the four-pane window in the east dormer, which has modern glazing in the shop and basement areas. The roof is covered with modern grey tiles, and stugged sandstone wallhead stacks are located at the east and west ends of the north and south elevations, all capped with circular cans.
