Description

Anderson and Goodlad's Solicitors is an early 19th-century tenement building located at 52 Commercial Street in Lerwick. It stands two stories high with an attic and has a concealed basement. The building is transversely adjoining the west end of the Post Office and features a two-bay gable with a shopfront facing Commercial Street, along with a three-bay entrance elevation to the close at the west. There is also a single-storey and attic wing that projects from the north gable. The shopfront has a textured cement finish, while the other walls are made of random rubble with stugged, droved, and polished ashlar dressings. The windows have projecting cills.

On the south elevation facing Commercial Street, the design is symmetrical, featuring a modern eight-panel, two-leaf timber door with a plate glass fanlight above it, centered on the principal floor, flanked by windows. The first floor has regular fenestration.

The west entrance elevation is near-symmetrical, with the basement exposed in the left bay. It has a two-leaf, four-panel timber door with a dentilled cornice and an etched glass fanlight above, centered on the principal floor. There is a window in the left bay and a blank space in the right bay, with regular fenestration on the first floor that includes a blind window in the right bay. A modern panelled door leads from Commercial Street to a flagged close, with stone steps to the basement located to the left of the entrance door.

The north elevation, facing the Esplanade, features a two-bay gable of the principal block, with the single-storey and attic wing projecting at the basement level. There is a single window to the right at the lower level of the wing gable, with windows flanking the center in the gablehead.

The building has timber sash and case windows, with 12-pane windows at the basement and centered on the first floor, while plate glass is used elsewhere. The roof is covered with purple-grey slate, featuring piend-roofed slate-hung canted timber dormers on each pitch, and the windows are plate glass timber sash and case. The rubble apex stacks have stugged sandstone ends on both the principal block and the wing, all capped with circular and octagonal cans.

The gatepiers consist of stugged squared and snecked sandstone walls with a saddleback cope extending to the right from the north gable of the wing, linking to square ashlar gatepiers that feature V-jointed rustication and pyramidal caps.
