Description
169 Commercial Street in Lerwick is a three-storey and attic tenement building, dating from around 1800. It has a near-symmetrical façade with three bays, arranged in a 2-1 grouping, and features shopfronts facing Commercial Street to the east. The building is constructed from rubble stone with droved margins at the corners and around the windows. It has a cavetto eaves cornice and projecting cills at the windows.
The east elevation, which faces Commercial Street, has a shopfront at ground level that is cement-rendered and lined. It features an early 20th-century polished grey granite fascia above the right bay, which is corniced and frames modern glazing and a door. The left bays have shop windows with two-pane fixed-lights and a glazed door.
The south gable is mostly blank, except for a vertically-boarded timber door on the left and a nine-pane fixed-light window with iron bars above the door lintel.
The rear elevation, facing east, has a later addition that is also cement-rendered and has a piend roof. There is a single flue rendered wallhead stack located to the right of the center.
The north gable is a blank rubble wall that is harled at the gablehead. The building features four-pane timber sash and case windows and a purple grey slate roof. There is a single piend-roofed, canted slate-hung timber dormer on the east pitch, which includes a four-pane timber sash and case window with two-pane sidelights. The building has harled four-flue apex stacks that are coped and have octagonal cans, along with cement-rendered skew copes and bracketed skewputts.
To the left of the principal elevation, there are timber lattice gates supported by cast-iron stanchions with urn finials.
