Description

175 Commercial Street in Lerwick is an 18th-century, two-storey tenement building. It features a two-bay gable facing Commercial Street and three-bay elevations on the northern and southern sides. The walls are made of harl-pointed and lined stugged sandstone, with droved ashlar dressings, and the eastern gable is painted. The windows have projecting cills.

On the eastern elevation, which faces Commercial Street, the design is asymmetrical. There is a panelled and glazed shop door with a plate glass fanlight in the left bay and a four-pane fixed-light shop window in the right bay. The first floor has regular window spacing.

The southern elevation has an infilled door at the center, with a four-pane hoppered timber window to the left. This elevation is canted forward at the outer left, featuring a door and shop window.

The northern elevation is advanced and curves to the right of center, with small windows at both the ground and first floors on the outer right. There are doorways flanking a re-entrant angle, one of which is infilled, while the other has a vertically-boarded timber door with a small window above.

The first floor features timber sash and case windows, while modern glazing is used elsewhere. The roof consists of corrugated sheets on the main pitches, and there is a curved and piended stone-clad roof on the northern addition. The eastern gable has a stugged sandstone apex stack with a cope, while the western side has a harled and coped apex stack with circular cans.

Access to the building includes flagged steps rising to the west along the northern elevation, with a concrete-covered dwarf wall topped by a cast-iron handrail supported by stanchions with ball finials.
