Description

99 Commercial Street in Lerwick is an 18th-century tenement building that has undergone 19th-century alterations. It is two stories high with an attic and features a two-bay gable facing Commercial Street to the north and a six-bay former entrance elevation to Gardie Lane on the west side. The walls are made of harl-pointed and cement-rendered lined rubble, with cement margins, cills, and quoins.

The north elevation has a near-symmetrical two-bay gable and a three-bay shopfront at ground level, which is cement-rendered and painted. The bays are divided by decorative stone columns, and the shopfront has modern glazing, with a door located in the right bay. The first floor has regular fenestration, and there are windows in the gablehead.

The west elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a shopfront that returns with a single window at ground level on the outer left. The first-floor window corresponds with the gable. The bays on the right have smaller floor heights and margined windows. There is an infilled architraved doorpiece with a fluted frieze and cornice above, centering three bays to the right, with a modern door inserted at ground level in the penultimate bay. There is also a square opening below the cill at ground level in the outer right bay.

The east elevation has a modern addition projecting at the first floor and shows evidence of infilled openings, some of which have margins. The building features timber sash and case windows, with four panes in the gable and plate glass over the doorpiece and at the first floor on the outer right of the west elevation. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a coped apex stack with circular cans.
