Description

109 Commercial Street in Lerwick is a four-storey tenement building dating from around 1900, with some earlier elements incorporated. It has a rectangular plan situated on a sloping site, featuring a gable facing Commercial Street and a two-bay elevation towards Mounthooly Street. There is also a two-storey L-plan building at the southwest, known as No 4. The principal front is constructed of stugged sandstone, with polished and droved ashlar dressings and projecting cills at the windows.

On the northeast elevation facing Commercial Street, the design is near-symmetrical, with a modern plate glass fixed-light window at the ground floor on the right and a shop door on the left. The upper floors feature tripartite windows, with the third-floor windows having segmental-arched openings.

The southeast elevation towards Mounthooly Street consists of two widely spaced bays. There is a narrow window centered on the second floor, with regular fenestration in the flanking bays. However, the ground floor window in the left bay is offset to the right and has been infilled, while the matching ground floor window in the right bay remains. A modern timber door is located at the ground level to the outer left.

The Lounge, which is part of the complex, has a three-bay southeast elevation, with the bays on the left advanced and timber entrance doors flanking the re-entrant angle. Its southwest elevation is gabled and has two bays, with a harled forestair leading to a door in the right bay at the first floor, while the left bay has an infilled window. A modern addition is present on the northwest elevation.

The tenement features modern multi-pane timber windows for Nos 109 and 2, with some surviving 12-pane timber sash and case windows on the side elevation. The Lounge has 4-pane timber sash and case windows. The roofs are covered with purple-grey slate, pitched to the southeast at The Lounge. A stugged and coped four-flue wallhead stack with octagonal cans is centered on the southeast elevation of No 2, with stugged and coped apex stacks on the southwest gables of both No 2 and The Lounge Bar, the latter featuring circular cans. Droved ashlar skew copes adorn the gables, and there is an iron cross at the apex of the northeast gable.
