Description

This is an early 19th century, three-storey and attic tenement building situated in Campbeltown. The building has an unusual U-plan layout and originally comprised eight bays across the front, although the rear elevation displays four bays. The front elevation, facing the main street, is smooth cement-rendered at street level, with roughcast walls above, accented by painted ashlar dressings. A base course, moulded string course above the shopfronts, a band course, and an eaves cornice contribute to the architectural details. Raised margins highlight the street-facing windows and corners, and projecting window cills add visual interest.

The south-west (Main Street) elevation is divided into eight bays, arranged in groups of two, each with a shopfront at ground level. The first and second bays feature a door leading to a common stair on the right, and a door to the left with flanking shop windows. The third and fourth bays have narrow shop windows flanking a recessed entrance door offset to the left of the fourth, while the fifth and sixth bays display a later shopfront with stall risers, a timber fascia, and a canopy, alongside a shared stairwell door. The seventh and eighth bays incorporate a narrow shop window and a recessed entrance door within a wide opening.

The south-west (Bolgam Street) elevation showcases a rendered and faux-stone pub frontage for the left bays at ground floor level, with entrance doors in the first and second bays, the latter flanked by windows. Rendered shopfronts with projecting cills are visible in the third and fourth bays. The north-east elevation is regularly fenestrated at the first and second floors.

The rear (north-west) elevation is symmetrical, with widely spaced centre bays and flanking tall stair windows at intermediate levels. Advanced gables flank the rear; the left gable has windows on the first and second floors to the outer left, with small windows at the centre, while the right gable features a small window at the centre of each floor and a single window at the centre.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, with 12 panes to most openings, multi-pane stair windows, and 4-pane and plate glass windows at ground floor level. Timber doors lead to the common stairs, featuring 9-pane glazed upper sections and 6-pane fanlights. The roof is of grey slate, with a bellcast profile and piended corners at the main (south-west) front and outbuilding. Piend-roofed, slate-hung, timber dormers, each with 4-pane timber sash and case windows and 2-pane sidelights, punctuate the roofline. A central 18-flue apex stack rises along the main ridge, flanked by 7 and 12-flue stacks symmetrically disposed, and 8-flue apex stacks are located at the gables, all topped with circular cans.

A single-storey roughcast outbuilding is attached to the north-west end wall, integrated with a coped wall connecting the rear gables of the main tenement.
