Description

The Royal Hotel, on Main Street in Campbeltown, was designed by James M Monro of Glasgow and built in 1907. It was partially rebuilt by him in 1941. It is a three-and-a-half-storey, five-by-five bay Glasgow Style hotel, arranged in an approximate L-shape on a corner site. The exterior is predominantly bull-faced squared and snecked sandstone with polished red sandstone ashlar dressings. A section of the northeast elevation is roughcast. A cornice runs along the eaves. The ground floor windows are bipartite with sloping cills, the first-floor windows are transomed with projecting cills, and the second-floor windows have corniced cills. A three-storey corner tower corbelled out over a chamfered corner at the first floor.

The southeast (Main Street) elevation has five bays, including the corner tower on the outer right, which features a bipartite window at ground level. A modern shop frontage with a corniced timber fascia is present above ground level in the bays to the left. A segmentally-arched main entrance is located in the bay to the right. To the left of the corner tower, the elevation is symmetrical, with three-light canted oriels at the first-floor outer bays, and bipartite windows at the second floor above. A four-flue wallhead stack breaks the eaves at the third floor's centre and is accompanied by gablet-coped dormers.

The northeast (Kinloch Road) elevation also has five bays, including the corner tower on the outer left, with a bipartite window at ground level. The second bay is blank, containing a bipartite window at ground floor level, while the third and fifth bays incorporate an infilled doorway between them. A three-light parapetted canted oriel is corbelled out at the first floor, and the fifth bay has a bipartite window above.

The rear elevations are roughcast and irregularly fenestrated, featuring ashlar cills, lintels, and mullions. Plate glass windows are present at the ground and first floors of the principal elevations. Upper sashes are four-pane with plate glass lower sashes at the second and third floors, with mainly four-pane windows at the rear. A glazed screen is within the entrance arch, with leaded stained glass in the upper lights, and there are two-leaf glazed timber entrance doors. Two leaded stained glass windows are located on the rear elevation. The roof is a grey slate mansard, with exposed rafter ends at the rear. A metal ogee roof with a missing finial tops the corner tower. Timber slate-hung, corniced box dormers are over the outer bays of the southeast elevation and over the three right-hand bays of the northeast elevation. Cast-iron gutters and downpipes, with profiled gutters and hoppers at the principal elevations, are present. The stacks are all corniced with circular red cans, with an ashlar multi-flue stack to the west of the tower, roughcast multi-flue apex stacks at the end gables, roughcast wallhead stacks at the rear elevations, and between the third and fourth bay of the northeast elevation.
