Description

This is a two-storey public hall and offices, built in 1885 to a design by Henry E Clifford. It is rectangular in plan and originally comprised three bays by five bays. The building is constructed of stugged, squared and snecked sandstone on the east and north sides, with coursed rubble on the west and south sides. The dressings are of stugged and polished ashlar, with droved arrises. A high base course runs to the level of the ground floor window sills, with cill courses at the first floor and eaves, though these are absent on the rear elevation.

The north-west (entrance) front is near-symmetrical, with the centre bay breaking the eaves to form an entrance tower. A shallow, round-arched recess extends the full height of the tower, containing an entrance door at ground floor level. Above the door is a pediment bearing the inscription "Christian Institute", flanked by narrow windows. A tripartite window extends the full height of the first floor, with a thermal window in the arch-head, and a keystone at the centre. A plain parapet sits at the tower eaves, topped by corniced terminal dies and ball finials. Tripartite windows are located at ground and first floor levels to either side of the centre bay. A further entrance door has been inserted into the central opening of the ground floor bay to the left. Modern glazing is present in all openings. The principal entrance doors are of timber, with six panels and two leaves, and a further four-panel, two-leaf timber door to the left.

The north-east (Hall Street) elevation is five bays wide, comprising a four-bay hall with an additional bay to the outer right. Bays 1 to 4 have arcaded windows at the first floor level, with a ground floor entrance door to the left of the first bay and an infilled window in the second bay. A tripartite window spans the third and fourth bays. A tripartite window is located at ground and first floor levels in the bay to the outer right, with a drip mould above.

The south-west (rear) elevation features narrow windows on the ground floor and round-arched windows on the first floor.

The building has silver grey slated roofs, with terracotta tiles at the principal ridge and on the piended roofs flanking the tower. The tower roof is bell-cast, with concealed flashings. There is a timber bellcote at the apex, topped by an ogee lead roof and a wrought-iron fish weathervane. The building has profiled cast-iron gutters at the eaves, and cast-iron downpipes with hoppers flanking the side elevations. Corniced, ashlar wallhead stacks with two flues are located at the north bays of the side elevations.

The interior of the building has been modernised, including the insertion of a false ceiling at first floor level.
